With the current global economic crisis, stress and its link to heart disease is back in the forefront of our awareness.

"Both heart attacks and cardiac arrest have been linked to stress, although there is more documentation on the former", said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, chief of women’s cardiac care at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "People who are chronically stressed have higher heart rates and blood pressure, and they also release more Cortisol (the stress hormone) into their systems."

Studies have also shown that people who exhibited indicators of stress or anger-prone personalities during their college years were more likely to develop heart disease, as well as to die from any cause by the time they reached the age of 50.
As we continue to be faced with increasing chaos and stress in our world, day by day, we will come to realize that the solution to stress is within our reach. Take a few minutes for the following exercise:

  1. Find a quiet comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. Remember to turn off your cell phone. Sit with your feet on the ground or you might like to recline, that’s okay too, (just do not cross your legs).
  2. Next take a deep breath and as you inhale tighten and tense every muscle in your body… now with a sigh or a grown exhale and release and relax every part of your body.
  3. You can now deepen your relaxation by focusing your attention starting at the top of your head and feel waves of relaxation flowing down through your body to the soles of your feet.
  4. Now that you are relaxed just watch your breathing. Do not try to control it, just observe it.
  5. If your mind begins to wander it’s alright, just re-focus on your breathing.
You can make the difference in your own health and fulfillment. The power and intelligence of the mind-body system is what gives us the ability to reprogram our automatic responses so we are able to recover more quickly and enjoy increased energy and peace.

Til next time, blessings,
